COMMERCIAL SUBJECTS.

HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION. PROPOSAL FOR NEXT YEAR. Commercial subjects may bo added to the curriculum of district high schools in the Auckland Province next year. Tho matter was before the Auckland Education Board yesterday, when letters from a number of headmasters in reply to an inquiry from the board were read. Theso showed that commercial subjects were not taught in a number of high schools, but that in each school there were pupils who desired to take the subjects. It was stated by members that children went to other schools for the reason that they could not obtain commercial instruction at high school. Tlio secretary read an extract from one of the replies which, he said, was typical. The letter explained that book-keeping was taught, but that shorthand required a specialist teacher. If tho school had a supply of typewriters it would probably be possible to arrange part-time instruction locally. .Mr. J. Boddie said he regarded shorthand and typewriting as necessary to all pupils wishing to follow a commercial career. It was decided to instruct the senior inspector arid tho advisory inspector with a view to having commercial subjects added to tho curriculum of district high schools in 1926, and to forward to the de;wrtment information regarding the number of pupils going from high schools to private institutions.
