HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.

PROTEST AT NEWMARKET. DEMAND FOR A CONFERENCE. A strong protest against tho reported refusal of the City Council to convene a conference to discuss tho distribution of traffic license fees waa made by Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket, at a meeting of tho Borough Council last evening. A considerable number of replies to tho council circular on the subject were received from various local bodies. The Mount Eden Borough Council replied that a. had asked the City Council to convene a conference. Tho town clerk then said that the City Council had already refused {be request Mr. Donaldson said that if this were true the council was not keeping faith with tho local bodies. When the arrangement with the City Council was entered into tho then Mayor had undertaken to call a conference of local bodies if requested to do so. It was strange if the City Council was not to bo trusted to fulfil its undertakings. If tho conference were not called tho local bodies would have to take steps on their own account to set tie matter right. Tho Local Bodies' Association should be asked to remind tho City Council that tho late Mayor had given nn undertaking that he would conveno a conference. If tho city still refused tho local bodies w° u ld take other steps to safeguard their rights.
