CITY WATER SUPPLY.
WORK ON THE NEW MAIN. COMPLETION IN OCTOBER. RESERVOIRS OVERFLOWING, Approximately three-quarters of the 33in. duplicate water main to 6ervc tho city has now been laid and the pipes jointed up. The work has been proceeding in several sections and one gang is at present engaged in excavating the trench for tho pipes in the New Lynn railway yards. Swampy conditions have been encountered at this point, and the recent heavy rains have rendered the work extremely unpleasant. Tho Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, inspected various portions of the lino yesterday morning. Ho stated later that it was hope® to have the greater, portion of the new lino linked up to tho Titirangi breakpressure reservoir within a month- This would bo dono by connecting up with a length of 13in. pipe, giving service from the reservoir, and by this means the daily delivery to the city reservoirs would be in tho vicinity of 13 million gallons. Tho 33in. main would be, carried right oil to tho Titirangi tanks and the whole lino completed by October next, when the full capacity of tho existing main and the new line would be available. The section of the new lino from the Khyber Pass reservoir northward was now ready to receive the water for testing purposes. Tho first four months of the present year wero abnormally dry and the light "rainfall was reflected in tho reservoirs in the Waitakeres, where the level of the water showed a slight fall. The rains which set in during the second week of this month helped to restore tho supply, and the more recent heavy downpour has completely filled the reservoirs which are now all overflowing.
