YACHT RACING.

PONSONBY CRUISING CLUB. HEWSON MEMORIAL CUP. WON BY QUEEN MARCH. Tho Potisonby Cruising Club brought its season to a close on Saturday afternoon, when two races for youths under 21 years were decided. The most important was a race for the Hcvvson Memorial Cup lor the Jellicoe class, which also carried with it tho junior championship of tho Waitoi i.'ita, Tho other event was a general ban Leap for classes T and Y for a handsome trophy presented by Messrs. Harrison and Muckay. Tho lieweoii Cup was won by tho Queen March, sailed by W. Rogers, and the general handicap by the Bronzewing, sailed by D. Logan. , The races were started from the launch Fleetwing, moored otf St. Mary's Bay, and were sailed over tho club's usual course lor the small classes. Tho oflicials in charge were:—Starter, Mr. 11. R. Arthur; judge, Mr. W. Joy lit; timokeepor, Mr. W. Goodison. Details are as follows: HEWSON MEMORIAL CUP. The race fo. tho Ilewsoil Memorial Cup was started at 1.35 p.m. and brought out Queen March, Iron Duke, Linnet, Dulcie, Joan, Idler and Kangi. On the fall of tho last tlag Joan crossed the line just ahead of Dulcie and Queen March with the others handy, except Rangi which was 15 minutes late. A light south-west wind was blowing, vvhicc gave the boats a beat up Ihe harbour to the Watchman mark. Joan and Queen March drew away from the others and after standing in port for some time both threw round on starboard. Joan was still in the lead when the Shelly Beacu baths were reached, but a little later Queeil March headed her rival. Rounding the. top mark the times of the leaders were:Queen March, 2h 11m 335; Joan,,2h 11m 41s; Idler, 2h 12m 30s; Iron Duke, 2h 12m 50s; Linnet, 2h 13m 40s; Dulcie, 2h 11m 10s; Rangi, 2h 20m 3s. It was now a run to tho Shoal Bay mark and with the wind increasing in strength good progress was made. No further change took place until on the close haul across the harbour, where Iron Duke failed to weather tho hulk Wanganui and Linnet passed her. Idler did well at this stage and almost caught Joan. Passing the flagship on tho completion of the first round the order was - Queen March, Joan, Idler, Iron Duke, Linnet. Dulcie. Rar.gi. On the beat un tho harbour again Joan drew away from Idler, while Dulcie was overtaken by Rangi. Rounding tho watchman mark the time 3 were: Queen March. 2h 53m 30s; Joan, 2h 54m 0s: Idler, 2h 54m 40s; Iron Duke, 2h 56m ss; Linnet, 2h 56m 40s; Itangi. 2h 57m 303; Dulcie, 3ii 2m os. Rangi improved her position on the run down the harbour and'finally headed Linnet, whilo Idler passed Joan on the close haul from Shoal Bay to the western tide deflector mark. The finishing times were:—Queen March, 3h 13m 7s; Idler, 3h If,in 3s; Joan. 3h 16m 12s; Iron Duke, 3h 20m 4fis; Rangi. 3h 21m 4Gs: Linnet, 3h 22m 355; Dulcie, 3h 29ni 20s. Result: Queen March, 1; Idler, 2; Jgan, 3. THE GENERAL HANDICAP. Tho general handicap was started at 3.40 p.m.. the courso for this event being reversed. From,a good despatch Bronzewing was first across the line, and was closely' followed by Sea Nymph Mighty Atom, Helen Jean. Marie, and Rangi; then camo Kismet.. Sea Gnome, and Joan. There was very little between them on tho run to the tido deflector mark, but on getting round Sea Nymph and Sea Gucmo drew away front tho others, which v.ere now all strung out astern. On the next, leg across tho harbour, spinnakers wore carried well forward. but before tho boats reached tho Shoal Bay mark the wind camo out more from the west and all had trouble with their light- sails, which had to be lowered. Hounding the buoy tho order was: Sea Nymph, Sea Gnomo, Mario, Mighty Atom, Bronzewing. Rangi, Kismet, Helen Jean and Joan. It was now a beat to the Watchman mark, and al! stood right across tho harbour on starboard to dodgo the tido. Sea Nymph continued her lead on the thrash to windward, but Sea Gnomo had lo give place to Bronzewing. which was sailing remarkably well. Off the baths at Shelly Beach tho order was: Soa Nymph, Bronzewing. Sea Gnomo. Mighty Atom, Kismet, Marie, Rangi, Joan, and Helen Jean. Bronzewing was gradually gaining on Sea Nymph, and when the Watchman buoy was reached tho laHrir only had a l«ad of ten seconds from Bronzewing. Sea Gnome was lm 10s further away, and then followed Mighty At.mi, Kismet, Marie, Rangi, Joan and Helen Jean. On the run down the harbour Sea Nymph and Bronze- I wing made a very close race of it, both drawing well away from the others. Off tho baths Mario replaced Kismet, while j .loan pa==o.:l Rangi. Just before r«"achi":; Ihe flagship Bronzewing overhauled Soa I Nymph. On the completion of the first, round, the times wre- Bronzewing, 4h 30m 365; Sea, Nymph. 4h 30m 375; Sea Gnome, ■lh 31m 455: Mighty Atom. 4h 32m Sfl.-i; Marie, 4h .Tim 355; Kismet, 4h 34m 51s; Joan, 4h 35m 475; Rangi, 4h 35m 545. Bronzewing and Sea Nymnh continued to firrht it out. and when fhey reached the tide defWtor Sea Nviuph once moro as--1 stimed the lead Meanwhile Helen Jean and Kismet cave up. There was no further change in the positions of the boats until after rounding tho Shoal Bay mark for the second time when Bronzewing passed Se.i Nvmnh on tho beal up to (he lon ma-'', and l"d for remainder of the race.
