ETIQUETTE UP-TO-DATE.
HELPFUL HINTS. "With regard to etiquette tlie world been divided into three classes: those whe know and don't care; those who don t know and do care; and those who don t know and don't care. Needless to say, it is for the second class that books on etiquette are provided. And when wo consider upon how many points most of us, if faced with unexpected social situations, require authoritative advice and assistance, it seems rather unfair that books dealing with delicate matters of this kind should appeal irresistibly to the sense of humour rathei than the sense of docorum. Possibly il is duo to the devastating solemnity witli which the authors of these estimabh publications regard any breach of theit redian laws In "Etiquette Up-to-Date" (T. W ernes Laurie) Miss Constance Burleigh has compiled a comprehensive guide for the would-be traveller in society (with a capital S.). For the most part, the advice is sensible and clearly expressed, and Mr. So-and-So will easily find out what to say to .Miss Blank in any dashed situation. Among "Things that are not. done" wc meet with th\> following useful counsel: "Do not. let nervousness make you appear awkward if unused to dining out. Other people will not be so likely to notice any little mistakes you make if you are quietly self-possessed." Thus is the way smoothed for the trembling aspirant.
