CHEAPER AND HOTTER. BRIQUETTES AS SUBSTITUTE • FOR COAL. * NOTABLE AUCKLAND PRODUCT. The utilisation of what are generally known as " waste products has yielded marvellous results in certam industries. It is pointed out that about half of the coal produced in New Zealand is dust, and for this a very useful purpose has been found by Mr. W. Dunlop, of Green Lane, Auckland. Coal dust possesses the same calorific value as coal, but the difficulty always has been to utilise it bo that " none of its heat-giving properties are dissipated. In surmounting -this trouble Mr. Dunlop is using the coal dust t to form cylindrically-shaped briquettes, 4in. long by 2£in. in diameter, and the really important fact is that here wa have the first successful attempt to produce a briquette which retains its shape until the whole of the coal dust it contains has yielded up all its heat-produc-ing properties; the process of binding does not lessen hut, instead, increases its heating values. The average price of household coal may be given as £3 15s a ton, but for the new briquettes the retail price is curtailed by 15s a ton. For whatever purpose ordinary coal is used the briquette may be confidently employed as a substitute, and a valuable contributing factor certain to be appreciated by the housewife is its cleanliness (no accumulaton of dust to be found on _ the cellar floor as exists where coal is the luel used), and the fact that the new product can now be supplied in any quantity from Mr. Dunlop's works, close to the corner of Green Lane and Great South Road, - is of interest to householders .and otters. It may, perhaps, be added that a series of • most exacting tests have been made with these briquettes, and it is only after they have successfully fulfilled all the requirements of such a test that they have boea offered for Bale to the public.—Advi.
