SHOP HOURS NOT KEPT.
the weekly half-holiday AUCKLAND PROSECUTIONS. A fruiterer and tobacconist, J. Douglas, was charged before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday with failing to close his shop on tho day he had notified for the observance of the weekly half-holiday. The inspector, Mr. P. G'. Weenink, said defendant had previously been fined and had received numerous warnings. Ho was very anxious that the law should be strictly observed by other shopkeepers but was apparently quite willing to e\ade it himself if an opportunity occurred. Mr. Wcnink pointed out that the Act granted the privilege of observing tho weekly half-holiday on other days in lieu of Saturday to shopkeepers in certain trades, but the Court had power to withdraw this privilege and order the observance of the half-holiday on Saturday in any case where an occupier was convicted of two offences within a period of two years. He did not, however, ask for such an order on this occasion. The magistrate fined Douglas £5 and 7s costs. For failing to close his shop at 5.30 p.m., a grocer, J. E. DeLuca, was fined £1 and 7s costs.
