SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS.
COMPLAINTS BY MERCHANTS. BASIC SLAC HELD IN STORE. A shortage of trucks for removing basic slag from the wharf sheds has been experienced by Auckland merchants during the past few days. Those concerned state that orders for trucks were placed in plenty of time. The delay has involved them in unnecessary expense for storage in wharf sheds. The particular cargo affected was that from the Silksworth, but a recurrence .of the trouble appeared' likely in respect of the slag from the llemuera. Another cause of delay was the shortage of tarpaulins. Trucks could sometimes have been supplied but without tarpaulins, which are essential to cover slag and other classes of manure. An officer of the Railway Department' admitted that there had been delays owing to shortage, of trucks and tarpaulinl;. The trouble was that Several ships were often discharging manures at (ho same time and it was not possible to meet all demands. It. was hoped that some relief would be afforded by the fuller usa of trucks under the , pooling system recently announced by, the Minister for Railways. This system had not yet been brought into operation.
