FRIEND OF THE SOLDIER.
TRIBUTE TO MR. HICKS. A representative deputation from the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association waited on Mr. Seymour Hicks at the Opera House yesterday for the purpose of conveying (lie appreciation of returned men of the hospitality extended to them by Mr. Hicks when they were on active service. It was recalled that Mr. Hicks used to accost lonely " diggers " in London streets and invite them to be his guests at his entertainments. There were among the deputation some who had been fortunate enough to meet Mr. Hicks under those circumstances. The president of the association, Mr. E. W. Inder, spoke of the qualities and influences for good displayed to New Zealand soldiers by Mr. Hicks and his wife, Miss Ellaline He, felt sure that the same spirit of hospitality would he reciprocated* to Mr. Hicks and his company during their stay in Auckland. Replying, Mr. Hicks said that what he had done seemed to him to be out of all proportion to the appreciative references tie had been receiving from all [tarts (if New Zealand. The lighter incidents of the war were recalled by the party, and a very pleasant hour was spent.
