ELDERLY WOMAN SAVED
RESCUE from drowning, gallant bus drivers, PROMPT RESPONSE TO CRY. MANGERE BRIDGE INCIDENT* At 9 o'clock last evening, Sergeant J. A. Cruickshnnk, in charge of the Onehunga police station, received advice from a motorist that there was somebody drowning near tho Mangero BridgeQuickly jumping in tho car he was soon at the water's edge, accompanied by Constable Poll. In tho moonlight they saw some people swimming in tho harbour, about a chain and a-half above the bridge. Clambering down the stone breastwork, they were able to assist the swimmers ashore, when they found they were two motor-bus drivers, who were supporting a woman. Tho men had heard the call of somebody drowning while crossing tho bridge, and had quickly gone to the rescue. They performed o feat of no mean order, for a swift current was running under the bridge, and they were fortunate in being able to effect a rescue. The woman, who was elderly, was in a state of exhaustion bordering on unconsciousness. She gave her name as Jane Jones, residing in \ indent Street. How she got into tho water is not known. Sergeant G'ruickshank was unable to got any of the four Onehunga doctors, but Dr. Rowley, of Epsom, responded to his telephono call, and after an examination of the patient he ordered her removal to the hospital, the ambulance reaching there soon after 11 o'clock.
