GARDEN HOSE RESTRICTIONS. PAVING IN KHYBER PASS* A meeting of tho Newmarket Borough Council last evening was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson. The town clerk reported that a number of names on tho district electors' list totalled 1734. The waterworks committee recommended that during the summer months the use of garden hoses in the borough should be restricted to two days a week—Thursdays and Sundays. It was also suggested that the fees for the use of hoses during the period of the restrictions should be reduced to 10s. Both recommendations were approved. The fact that the recent investigations into leakages of the borough water supply have had the desired effect is indicated by the consumption of water for the month of January. It shows a reduction on oliat of the previous month. The sum tendered for the concrete paving of Khyber Pass for £2997 19s 6d, by H. Bray and Company, was accepted. The borough engineer's estimate of the cost of the work was £3376 2s 4d. A letter from the Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department intimated that the council's representations to the effect that the Newmarket Borough should be exempted from the operation of the regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act owing to the arrangements already made with the Auckland City Council, would receive early consideration. Measures which are considered necessary for the checking of tho progress of the infantile paralysis epidemic were received from the Health Department. Councillors stated that tho utmost wouTd be done to sec that they were carried out.
