SURGEONS' CONGRESS.

NEW YORK CONFERENCE. DOMINION INVITATIONS. MINISTER UNABLE TO ATTEND. fBX *m.EGBAFH. —OWN COItRESPONDENT.] "WELLINGTON. Monday. One of the most notable assemblages known to the medical and surgical professions throughout the world is the annual congress of the jkmerican College of Surgeons, held in New York. It embraces 2000 representatives from the United States, Canada and South America, and the latest developments in surgery are discussed.

In past years it has been the practice also to invite leading surgeons from Great Britain and Europe to be present at the deliberations, and take part in them. As a result of the recent visit to Australia and New Zealand of two loading American surgeons, Dr. Mayo, of the famous Mayo Clinic at Rochester, and Dr. Martin, controller of the American College of Surgeons, several Australian and New Zealard surgeons have been invited to attend the next annual congress to be held in New York on October 27 next. Dr. Mayo and Dr. Martin attended the congress held in New Zealand recently, and visited the principal hospitals in the Dominion. The effect of their visit has been to make the progress of the profession in New Zealand better known in America, and, the invitations have followed.

The Minister for Health, Sir Maui Pomare, was invited to represent New Zealand in an official capacity at the congress, but replied that he regretted his inability to be present. It is understood that Sir Lindo Ferguson, who was recently knighted, has been asked to allow an honorary degree of the American College of Surgeons to be conferred on him. It is possible that other New Zealand surgeons intend to make the trip to New York, but their names have not been officially notified. The British Medical Association in New Zealand is not officially aware whether any of its members are going.
