MEXICANS DEFIED.
BRAVE BRITISH WOMAN. MRS. EVANS DEFENDS HER FARM. Snn., LONDON. July 13. The Daily Mail states that Mr. Herbert Cummins, till Tecently British Charge d'Affaires in Mexico, who wa3 forced to leave the capital because of his defence of a British woman's rights, has arrived in London. Mr. Cummins related a graphic story of the siege of the British legation in Mexico City. The Mexicans ordered his departure on June 10, but he determined to remain until he received instructions from Britain. Chains and padlocks were used to fasten the legation gates. Stout wooden doors and steel shutters barred any attempt at forcible entrance. Letters were smuggled into Mr. Cummins from an unofficial source.
Mrs. Evans, who was largely the cause of the Mexican Government ordering him to leave, was a wonderful woman, said Mr. Cummins. He continued: "Whitehaired, nearly £0, she stands on the farmyard battlements, a rifle on her shoulder, defying assault, or bsating off attackers with the courage of the bravest man. "When farming Mrs. Evans wears riding breeches, but when visiting the city she dresses in the height of fashion. The last I heard of her was that she was still at her post on the rcof of the house. I believe it will take a large force to defeat her, as the attackers dare not kill her, seeing that the whole world knows and is thrilled by her wonderful resistance. Mrs. Brans is the sort of woman who is born once in a century."
