INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES.

AUSTRALIAN WORKERS.

SHIPS. TRAMS AND TOLICE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. May 18. ; A mass meeting of the Seamen's Union decided to continue to boycott the Karoola and Katoomba, and to extend the boycott to the whole of the vessels of the Mcllwraith and McEachern line. Eight steamers will thus be rendered idle. Representatives of other maritime unions attended to urge a settlement of the dispute on account of the numbers of their men involved, but they were refused a hearing. It is understood that the Mcllwraith line, will shortly cite the union in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court with a view to securing cancellation of the registration of the union.

Melbourne advices state that a conference of parties to the tram strike in that city was held in camera in the Arbitration Court. The result was not made public,. but it is known that the strike is still unsettled. • The Federal executive of the Tramway Workers' Union has now taken control of the negotiations.

A message from Brisbane states that the threatened crisis in the police force has passed, an agreement having been reached. Some of the men's claims have been conceded, and a satisfactory basis has been found for further adjustment.
