COLLAPSE OF A BRIDGE.
tasmanian accident. The Victoria Bridge, connecting East and West Devonport, Tasmania, collapsed recently, and' is beyond repair. Three loaded waggons had just crossed from East Devonport, when Mr. Eldridge's steam waggon, with a trailer, both loaded with straw, met. Mr. Alfred Raid's empty waggon, driven by his son, who was returning to Northdov.-n. The structure suddenly gave way, and both vehicles were precipitated into the River Mersey. A man named Griffiths was fishing In a boat nearby, and cut the harness, releasing the horses, one of which swam to the eastern bank and two to the western bank. Both drivers escaped without injury. The ravages of a destructive pest were responsible for the collapse of the bridge. The eastern abuttment is secured, but the swing portion with several bay*, has collapsed, leaving only a small icrlion of the western end still intact, though its decking is defective. An entirely new structure will bo required, causing heavy expense.
