CITY DEVELOPMENT.
ROADS AND TRAMWAYS.
NEW PLANT AUTHORISED.
The necessity of the City . Council adopting the most modern methods in city works was emphasised yesterday by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson. A. progressive policy was being followed by the council in respect to all works, said th<3 Mayor, and extensive additions were being made to plant and equipment. The assistant engineer, Mr. W.. Tyler, was leaving for America and England to-day and would investigate methods of road construction and other matters of modern development in municipal services. He had been commissioned .to purchase a new crushing plant with a producing capacity of 60,000 yards of metal per annum. This would be capable of further development. The city's present requirements,. including those of the Tramways Department, were about 50,000 yards per annum. The new plant was expected to bo in operation within a year. Further new equipment for the Tramways Department included automatic compression ; drills, rollers and smaller accessories designed to give more effective work in the heavy programme ahead. It was expected that a start would be made in April on . the new Edendale extension. In addition, for the current year there was a very heavy programme of duplication work and a considerable length of reconstruction of lines. The duplications would include the Onehunga, Grey Lynn and Remuera lines, which would be completed by September, "the reconstruction of old lines at . present provided for would take till July. 1925. The question of renewals and special work at some of the points and junctions for the better security of traffic was also receiving the attention of the management.
