——-——*•* —: — ■ —~" '•". ..',.' CONCLUSION OF CONFERENCE WORK FOR COMING YEAR. The first meeting of the new council of the Architects' Institute was held, at the Town Hall yesterday, when officers and committees were appointed for the ensuing year. ' Mr. Wm. Page (Wellington) was unanimously elected president, high appreciation of his. serves to.' the Institute being expressed by several members. Mr. W. Gray Young was appointed hon. secretary, Mr. C. H. Mitchell treasurer, and Mr. W. Crichton, the retiring president, deputy chairman of the executive committee. A remit from the Auckland branch, suggesting that the necessary steps be taken to form a South Auckland branch, with headquarters at Hamilton,' was approved. Mr. C. R. Ford moved that the Education Committee be requested to. consider the whole question of Institute examinations, and to report upon the proposed fusion of R.1.8.A. and Institute examinations, the motion being carried. The matter of the shortage of mechanics was referred to the Finance and Executive Committee for consideration, and report. The importance of the adequate representation of the Institute 'at the conference to be called by the Forestry Department was emphasised by Mr. R. A. Lippincott. The matter is to be referred to the various branches. The regulation -recently issued by the Education Department instructing boards not to employ private practitioners for the design of school buildings was considered by th« new. council. A resolution was carried expressing the Institute's disapproval of the regulation as a ; retrograde step, and requesting the executive to arrange ifor the Minister for Education to receive a deputation on the subject. ' The concluding social features of a successful four-days' gathering were a launch picnic on the harbour yesterday afternoon, and a smoke concert held at the Society of Arts gallery last evening. -
