BRITISH ELECTIONS.

MAY BE HELD THIS YEAR

PARLIAMENT TO DECIDE.

EARLY TEST OF OPINION.

MINISTERIAL CAMPAIGN.

By Telegraph— Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Nor. 7. The Parliamentary correspondent of the Daily Telegraph states that it would be unwise to rule out altogether the possibility of a general election before Christmas, though the greatest weight of Unionist opinion appears to favour the. last week of .January. Tho choice of date largely depends on events in Parliament next week. If certain proposed extensions of the Safeguarding of Industries Act are challenged as a breach of Mr. Bcnar Law's pledge, Mr. Baldwin may decide to seek immediately the country's verdict on the programme he outlined at Manchester. Possibly, therefore, the country may be in tho midst of an election campaign within a fortnight. Mr. Ramsay MacDouald, Loader of the Parliamentary Labour Party, speaking at Cy minor, said that the Labour Party would attack Mr. Baldwin with all the energy and enthusiasm tho party could command. The Marquis of Salisbury, Lord President of the Council, in a speech at Hull, said that if by a system of preference Britain could to some extent lower the wall against her in the Dominions in return for certain fiscal advantages, that would be in the interest of Free Trade. Mr. L. C- M. S. Amery, First Lord of the Admiralty, speaking at Hanley, said that Mr. Baldwin had especially excluded wheat and meat from the proposed new tariff so as to take away the old parrot cry about taxing the people's food.
