ATHLETIC SPORTS.

m ....LAWN'.TOIS. ' NOTE* AND COMMENTS. THE AUCKLAND/ASSOCIATION All clubs were a hive of industry on l\ J . " Saturday last, and the beautiful weather 5 V -J/ lent itself to the gaiety of the various i> functions organised for opening day. Rom now, on serious attention will need 8; be paid to practice by those seeking V cbamnionship honours at the New Zealand meeting, which starts on Boxing Day at Christchurch. ■'■-.-. -As inter-club matches do not start until November 17 Saturday will provide-an-. . ' other opportunity : for membersof the Stanley Street court* to play. A number of new members were elected this week, but the list is not yet full. It is surprising that these courts are not better patronised by members of clubs located over the water, or in the more distant, parts of Auckland's suburbs. The opportunity for singles practice of an evening should be a great inducement to these players to join. Members have the privilege of taking visitors for play on pay- | ment of a small fee. j "The monthly meeting of the Auckland j Association was held on Tuesday evening, : Mr. Hugh Thomson presiding. The interclub scheme, for senior grade competition, arrived at as a result of a meet- ; ing between the inter-club sub-com-mittee and : a representative of each of the senior ■ clubs, was adopted. All the inter-club matches for all grades start on November 17. The exhibition matches played by. the Australian Davis Cup team showed a profit, after dividing equally with the Australian Association, of approximately £40. HH Wilding Memorial Shield. * Correspondence was read at the Auck- j land Association's meeting in connection With Auckland's challenge for the Wilding Memorial Shield, which is a competition between teams from the associations affiliated to the New Zealand Association. At present this is held by the Canterbury Association, and both Wellington and Auckland are anxious to play for it while ■their teams are in Christchurch for the championship meeting. The rules provide that challenging shall commence from. October 1 in each year, and the Auckland and Wellington Associations both had theirs in on that date, the former for Christmas and New Year's Days and the latter for New Year's Day and . the . "day following. "'".•>.■■'.;:■ ■"...;. \ ■-" ■:'■"■ ♦i ; Some misunderstanding •. exists over the interpretation of the rule governing the method to be adopted in tendering challenges, which , the. rule ... states must :be sent (a) to the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association and (b) r 'ia the secretary of the defending association, so that it shall reach the latter 21 dear days before the date- on which it w 'Proposed to hold - the match. The Auckland Association complied with section (a); of the rule, and waited acceptance by the New Zealand Association before ; fulfilling flection (b). '?. This has now been done, and all is in order. t < The Wellington Association, however, obtained an ac<?eptanc*i of their challenge from the Canterbury Asso-' '} ciation on September 29. This is ultra • vires, as the rules provide that the right to challenge commences on October I. The New Zealand Association : is having diffi: r '.jstfty in i deciding which shall have the' ■'•' first match. Auckland's chances seem the Hbetter, for it- v has complied with all the . : regulations, and its first date, Christmas Day, is prior to that asked for by the. ! „ tWellington Association. l. The distance bejEveen Auckland and Christchurch, ; entail ;iag heavy travelling expenses, is another factor which should have every consideration. ''' ;• ?i-" :".-■'V ' " • -"■ _•■* ,""*..
