SECRETARY FOR MARINE.

OBJECTION TO APPOINTMENT.

RESOLUTION OF- SEAMEN.

The appointment of Mr. G. C. Godfrey, Assistant Under-Secretary for Public Works, to the position of Secretary for Marine, has* not the general approval of the members of the Seamen's Union. The appointment was discussed at a stop-work meeting of the union, when a resolution was passed deploring the fact that the Government had appointed a permanent secretary from outside the Marine Department. The resolution stated that thn Marine Department was a most important one, in view of New Zealand's development a maritime country, and that its head should be a man with a thorough knowledge of maritime law and marine matters. Thorough qualification for the position should be the only consideration governing the appointment.
