PACIFIC CABLE BOARD.
CHAIRMANSHIP QUESTION. OFFICIAL OR BUSINESS MAN. Australian Mid N.Z. Cable Association. CRecd. 10.5 p.m.) LONDON. Nor. 6. It is understood that the Treasury has appointed S'<r William Mercer to the vacant chairmanship of the Pacific Cable Board. It is believed, however, that the Dominion representatives have protested against the appointment, and urge that members of the board should be consulted. Certain members also hold the opinion that, in consequence of projected developments and the growing importance of tho cable service, a business man with specialised training rather than an official should be appointed. Meanwhile S ; r William Mercer's appointment is not confirmed.
Sir William Mercer, -who is 68 years of age, has been a member of the Pacific Cable Board since 1901, and was secretary to ths Pacific Cable Committee in 1896. He has had a distinguished official career. From 1920 to 1921 he was senior Crown Agent for the Colonies. In 1916 ho wis appointed chairman of the West African Currency Board, and in 1919 chairman of the East African Currency Board.
