WESTLAND SAWMILLS.
RESTRICTION ON EXPORT. [B"S TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.} CHRISTCHUECH. 'Wednesday. Advices from Grey mouth state that last year about 17,000,000 superficial feet of timber from the West Coast was used in Canbixbury, and it is anticipated that this year will see the figures reach 25,000,000 ft. Those competent to know do not anticipate that the present boom in the sawmilling industry will last much beyond - Cnrijitrnas. The industry is in a flourish--ing condition because of the heavy demands from Canterbury, consequent upon the opening of the Otira tunnel, but it is anticipated that this market will soon bo filled.- The millers, particularly in Westland, are perturbed at the restrictions this year on exports to Australia. These do not operate on white pine, but red pine is adversely affected. One company sent 360,000 superficial feet of rimu to Australia last year, but this year the total allowed has been reduced to 92,000 ft., despite the fact that it has orders to the end of the year for 250,000 ft.
