Jessie* Mc'&jnzie, a middlo-aged women, - appeared on remand oh/a charge of having 6tolen a child's coat valued at £8 Bsj ; th». property of Arthur Barnett. %<-■ She ; was further charged with the theft of a- lady's silk knitted dress, valued at £9 9s, the property of some person unknown. Mr. Irwin appeared for accused, ; who pleaded •guilty.".;,- '* ' ;;/■■'■'"■.,,'."' , Sub-Inspector, Ecclesj said that the coat was I '''hanging up inside a shop when' accused took it,;■ and in her effort to secure it she hurst the tag. ;. She was hot seen in the act, but the coat was ; ;missed, ' and next . day detectives ; called :on ; her, : and after some questioning she admitted the theft. The detectives thin went back to the room, when a jumper and the silk dross were found in a , trunk. Accused had a; most remarkable record, and ; was at present . on five years' probation : ". ■■'■':'- Mr.: Irwin handed in ;a : clipping "from an Auckland piper detailing the circumstances against her in the Northern city. There appeared to he no valid reason for what she had done. .The accused. was remanded for a week in custody. . ~
