PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

DEVONFORT SCHOOL'S RECORD.

The winners of the first and second prizes in connection <; with the Zoo essay competition—Marjorie Rogers, of the Dsvonport ' School and Jack"Mulgan, - of Maungawhau : School, :; respectively—attended the meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening, to receive their prizes. ' ■>. . '■'... "'■ ' The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson. who donated the prizes for the essay competition, congratulated the winners on their successful efforts, and presented the prizes. "'"::• \

Mr. S. I. Crookes, who judged the competition, spoke of the splendid matter in Miss Rogers' essay, the careful way in which ;it was written, and the entire absence of mistakes. He considered this a most creditable performance and hoped it was the forerunner of better work in the future. The same remarks would apply to the essay of Jack Mulgan, who sent his contribution under the name of " Bill Sykes." While this essay was up to the standard of the winner it failed to take first place on the score of handwriting. ■•■ < - •\'.".> The winners were warmly applauded. The wiccer of the first prize, Miss Marjorie Ror'.rs, is in standard 6 . of the Devonpor;- School. During the present year th* pupils of this class have achieved no little 1 success as a result of their literary tah-rtv, the record being' fir.st in the essay for the Returned Soldiers' Association, winning taam of six pupils for Anzac Day Banner essay, and first in essay competition for the Winter Show. The teacher of this class, Mr. R. S. Webster, is to bo congratulated on this ; record.
