GOVERNMENT REPORT.

The Government .meteorologist*reported last evening as follows:—Present indications are for ' south-westerly to southeasterly winds, strong to gale, cold and squally conditions, with rain probable generally, and snow on tlio higher levels. The barometer is rising . everywhere.

HERALD SPECIAL FORECAST. The following weather forecast for the. 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied to us by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening: Cold and showery weather is likely generally, especially in southern districts, with southerly winds, strong 'to galo, prevailing. Seas heavy, especially in and around Cook Strait, these conditions being due to the rear portion of the recent disturbance, which will now pass "to the eastward, being replaced shortly by fine, clear weather throughout! the Dominion, lasting over several clays, as an anticyclone, (or high barometric pressure system) is advancing from the Tasman Sea.
