LURE OF BACCARAT.
GAMBLING AT DEAUVILLE.
THE BANK LOSES. £250,000.
LONDON, Aug. 24.
Fantastic sums of money are changing hands over the baccarat tables at Deauville. Hundreds of millionaires are assembled from all parts of the world, it being the height of the season. The luck during the past few days has favoured gamblers against the bank, with the result that . a group of professional bankers has lost £250,000.
Mr. Charles Pucinelli, a well-know rubber merchant, had uncanny luck, and won' £10,000 during the week-end, which saw fortunes m'ou and lost in a few seconds.
The spirit of gambling pervades the whole place, and nothing else matters. Some of the most famous and beautiful demi-mondaines flaunt their gorgeous and costly dresses, and parade the Casino,'but nobody notices them. One of them,' it is stated, remarked : "The men always made a fuss over me, but now nobody even knows I'm here." , Theatrical beauties concentrate their whole attention on tho gambling, and never even glance at th« men around the tables. Players are indifferent as to whether their neighbour is an earl or an American magnate. . .. V Pucinelli's system is never to follow his losses. , He keeps a cool head, and backs against the banks in the third coup.
