THEFT AND FORGERY.
EMPLOYER'S CHEQUE TAKEN.
ABSTRACTED FROM OPEN LETTER.
A plea of guilty to charges of stealing a letter containing a cheque for £10 13s 3d, and forging and uttering the cheque, was entered bv Clifford Nelson "Double, aged 22. in llie l\»l?ce Crurt yes'er-Jiy. before Mr. J. W. Povnton, S.M. The circumstances as disclosed were thai accused was employed a few months ago at Takatn Point, Matakana, as a farm labourer. In Juno ho was sent to get bis employer's mail. The letters had become wet, and one containing a cfeeoue sent in payment for wool was open. Accused kept the cheque, and about a fortnight later left his employment and came to Auckland. He bought a pair of boots at an establishment where he knew his employer had an account, and cashed the cheque, after endorsing it with his employer's name. He received £8 13s 5d change. Later accused wrote to his employer telling him. he had taken the cheque, and saying he would repay the amount as* soon as he could. However, nothing had been paid. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
