DEAD-HEAT IN LEADING RACE.

The • combined meeting held by the Franklin and Matamata Racing Clubs opened at EDerslie yesterday, and the weather, conditions proving favourable there was an attendance of between ■ 6000 and 7000. As a , result • of recent rains the race track was in a heavy state;; With Mr. W. S. Spence on hand to supervise . the management everything '•'/ worked quite smoothly throughout the day, which proved a moat pleasant one. ' The seven events which formed the programme attracted good fields, and several exciting contests eventuated. : Mr. A. W. Gordon was the stipendiary steward in attendance, but the day was without an incident calling for inquiry. The totalisator investments amounted to £28.52. •■"•/;

Several falls occurred during the running of the Steeplechase. .E. Warner, who had the mount on Irish Errand, \vas severely hurt, and a fear is expressed that one of his shoulder-blades has suffered a fracture. Flowing Bowl was favourite*. Bovo- lost a lot of ground at the start, and Daloopil soon took charge, leading over tne first hurdle and past the stand, closely attended -by. Bright Liight, who was raoing in sixth position, falling at the fence by the six furlong post, and Economic came to grief at the next fence. As they crossed the." top. Elstow, Thiganthu and Daloopil were racing together in the lead. Thiganthu led round the turn from Daloopil and Hokemai, Elstow having fallen at the hurdle by the three furlong post.
