STATE-AIDED HOUSING.
RESULTS IN GREAT BRITAIN.
■ The latest official figures show that under the State-aided municipal housing ST I in England and Wales over 195000 bouses have been actually comi pleted, while 20,000 are in course of erection and 30,000 approved, bat not yet commenced. The following figures indicate the progress that has been made in Scotland:— Pormanont houses completed, 15.935; temporary houses completed, 665 j • reconstructed houses completed, 101; houses completed under the private subsidy scheme, 2241: total, 18,942. There are 4956 houses under construction in connection with housing schemes carried out by ; local authorities an public utility f societies. The total amount paid by the Scottish Board of Health in respect of the 2241 houses completed under the private subsidy schemes is £541,137. Considerable enterprise has been shown by municipal authorities and their officials in the adoption of new building materials and methods of construction. A great opportunity has been provided for the development of concrete construction in its various forms. This has naturally given a wonderful impetus to the manufacture of concrete machinery and led to the introduction of many improvements. Ashestos-cement materials, steel winnows, patent composition boarding for lining walls and ceilings, modern sanitary, equipment, expanded metal of various types for use as a reinforcement in concrete and for lathing in exterior and interior plastering work, jointless composition flooring, etc., are all among the newer forms of materials which, have beenlargely employed with gre t success in many of the huge schemes that have been and are still in progress.
