ROADS ON CROWN ESTATES
QUESTION OF FORMATION.
ONE TREE HILL BOARD'S VIEW.
"It should be made clearly known to the public that this board will not spend one shilling on the formation of roads which the Government has dedicated and left in an unformed condition," said the chairman of the One Tree Hill Road Board, Mr. R. G. Clark, last evening. The matter rose out of a request from Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., that the board urge the Government to proceed with the sale of sections on the Cadman and Carroll estate, in the vicinity of Ellerslie, so that the land might be available for workers' homes. This estate, comprising about 80 acres, was recently subdivided by the Crown into quarter-acre sections, the allotments all fronting . an unformed road. It was stated by the chairman that the Government had power to dedicate any unformed road without conforming with the borough by-laws or consulting the local authorities in any matter concerning provision of drainage, water supply, lighting, etc* The board took very strong exception to this attitude, which was considered most unfair to , intending purchasers of such sections. "We must let it be definitely known,'* said Mr. Clark, "that if the Government carries out its intention of splKngr these sections under the present conditions, the board will refuse to spend any money on' the formation of the road, and it is only fair that intending purchasers should understand this."
