Richardson, last evening. There was » very large gathering; of representatives of the; insurance fraternity over whom Mr. 0. A. j Richardson, of the Mutual life and Citizens' Company, presided. In his address the chairman referred to 1 the long association of the guest of the, evening with Government insurance. Mr.; Richardson had entered the department in 1874, and had , been engaged in insurance work for over 60 years. His promotion had/been particularly rapid, and the Government Insurance Department was a monument to his connection with' it. The funds' showed the ■ progress-that had been made. When Mr. Richardson had assumed control the funds had totalled £1,500,000, how they were £6,000,000. The chairman then presented Mr. Richardson with a gold watch from those present. _ :> ' ' In reply Mr. Richardson said he had been commissioner for 33 years, and was within a year of 50 years of service "when he retired. '
