FIRE IN WELLINGTON.

VULCANISER'S SHOP BURNED.

DROPPED MATCH THE CAUSE.

On Tuesday afternoon the fire brigade was called upon to quell a slight outbreak n a shop occupied by Mr, A. L. Spiers, vulcaniser, and owned by tho proprietors of the Artoraft Theatre. Despite the pre. sence of a largo amount of inflammable material the fire was suppressed.

This evening a second fire occurred. When the brigade arrived the interior of the building was a mass of flames, black smoke pouring from every window. In. an hour's, time the brigade had checked the. fire. The premises were completely gutted. Mr. Spiers says he was holding a match while doing some work and burnt his fingers. The match was dropped to the floor arid the vulcanising solution ignited. Insurances total £1025.

A fire occurred at ten to-night in Whitcombe and Tombs' large book and sta.establishment in Cashel Street.. The seat of the fire, which had a good hold, was at the. cash desk in the rear portion of the shop. The brigade made a splendid save. . ■; '..'., It is impossible to assess the damage to-night, but the fire superintendent states that the loss by the destruction of the plate-glass ceiling and damage to the stock and fittings will run into hundreds of pounds. The insurances are not available.
