ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. ACCUSED ON REMAND, "Other matters are being inquired into, and there is. a likelihood of a charge of having obtained £305 from a girl being preferred against this man," said ChiefDetective Mcllveney in the Police Court yesterday regarding Arthur Toruson, aged 35 (Mr. Schramm), -who appeared on a charge of having, with intent to defraud, obtained £12 from Annie Cousens by a false pretence, by falsely representing that Florrie Ley had sent him to obtain £12 on her behalf. On the chief-detective's application accused was remanded till May 11, bail being fixed at £300. A SERIES OP CHARGES. John O'Shea, aged 29 (Mr. Mouatt) was 'remanded for a week on charges of having assaulted Emily _ O'Shea, having used obscene language in New North Road, having wilfully damaged two panes of glass valued at £2, and having assaulted and resisted Constable Taylor in the execution of his duty. Bail was fixed, at . £50. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. No unusual features were presented by the weekly list of by-law prosecutions, but the breaches committed proved rather costly in several cases. A fine of £5 and los costs was imposed on C. Jackson for driving a motor-car in Karangahape Road in a manner dangerous to the public The speed of the motor-car was estimated at from 35 to 40 miles an hour. ? C. F. Elliott was also fined £5 and costs for having failed to stop and render assistance to a boy, who had been knocked over by the car he was driving. For driving a motor vehicle without a license F. Pallette was fined £2 and costs 7s, and for attempting to cross the level crossing in Breakwater Road -when a train was approaching lie was convicted and ordered to pay £1 13s costs. V. F. McLeod was also convicted and ordered to pay £1 18s costs for attempting to drive over the same crossing while a train was approaching. His car was struck by the train, but practically no damage was done. J. A. Tnompson was fined £2 and costs for driving on the wrong side of the road. A number of minor cases were also dealt with.
