A YEAR OF OFFICE.

N.S. WALES GOVERNMENT. EXTENT OF ECONOMIES. [from our own correspondent.] SYDNEY, April 25. There are no spectacular high lights about the New South Wales Government, but for all that it has accomplished good work during its first year of office. Reviewing the activities of the State National Party last week, the Acting-Pre- , mier predicted that a saving of. £3,000,000 would have been effected by the end of the current financial year, and that the Government would still be, able to show a surplus. The claim to have saved that amount will doubtless be challenged, for in it is included some £2,000,000 which the last Labour Government proposed to add in the way of additional taxation and expenditure had it been returned to power. But the fact cannot be overlooked that the defeat of the Dooley Ministry by the present Government saved that additional' expenditure. There , cannot, however, be any disputing that the balance of the £3,000,000 represents a genuine decrease in expenditure and increase in revenue. This result is the more gratifying in that it has been obtained in the face of an increase in the interest bill amounting to £600,000 and without the necessity for increased taxation. Taken all round the record for the 12 months shows that Sir George Fuller and his colleagues are tackling the task of " cleaning up " .in real earnest. The outlook is infinitely better than it was when they took office.
