DENIAL OF PATERNITY UPHELD.

■ When an ; application for an order ; for the maintenance of a child in a receiving home was made : against a.; man in ; the Police Court yesterday,. defendant said the child was not his and he had no' knowledge of it whatever. It; was stated that the child; was born in 1911 and bore dofondant's name. ■ ''}■'. ;'". v;

The case was dismissed. s ; SEVERAL ; CASES REMANDED.; On two charges of breaking and entering and theft at Avondale and a charge of vagrancy, Daniel McCarthy was remanded till Monday. It was alleged that accused ; entered a store and stole cigarettes, matches and chocolate, valued at four shillings, and that ho broke into a dwelling and stole £13 10s. . A young Maori, William Nathan, was remanded til] to-day on a charge of breaking and entering and* theft at Portland. ; " He is not quite normal and it is hard to know what to do, with him," said the magistrate, when Albert Newald, aged 22, admitted stealing nine dozen empty bottles valued at 13s 6d. The bottles had been recovered;; The Rev. Jasper Calder, Anglican city missioner, offered to take the young man and see what could be done with him. Accused was accordingly remanded for a week..
