The United Kingdom' stands at the bead of the list of motor shipbuilding countries. The total deadweight \ tonnage : built during 1923 was 429,465 tons against 833,475 tons in \ 1921.. The machinery power installed lin .these i vessels has ; increased from' an aggregate of 128,500 " ; to 164,735 Vindicated ; horse-power; moreover, the corresponding figures for 1921 j were "approximately £0 per cent.: in excess of those recorded l in*l92o. The ' United Kingdom contribution for- 1922 -was 21 . vessels, totalling '$ 181.750. tons - deadweight, against 14 : ehipa of 116,850 tons for 1921, : Germany's contribution for the corresponding years being 87,200 tons . and 27.300 tons : respectively.' It "- is further significant that the tonnage of :; individual V ships '■ has "•- considerably ■ increased. Orders have ■ been placed 1 for cargo vessels ;; of 21,000 tons 1 deadweight and also for a passenger liner "of 22,000* tons deadweight. v; There -is . every i evidence, says the Monthly Bulletin Vof the Department of Overseas .Trade., that for moderatesized cargo vessels.the oil-engined ship, compared with the steam-engined vessel, is now far and away the ] more economical in running costs.
