NORTHCOTE BOROUGH.
The first .meeting; of the newly-elected ■> Borough ' Council ,of North cote .='wad held last evening. The .Mayor, Mr. W. E. Richardson, presided, and there were also present Messrs. F. 0. Devlin,- J. B. Tonar, A. Golden, W. C. Smith, A. W. Smith, f, 0. R. Brinaden, W. Kinloy and 0. : Hunter. Members /made the usual declaration and were' welcomed by the Mayor. J ' The waterworks engineer intimated that 1,471,000 gallons of water had been used; during April.-."< The surface of Lake Takapuna was 3in. above sea level. >; '' Tho engineer'was requested, to report upon requirements for the : extension of ;i the water main in Waimana Avenue, and, to submit specifications prior to calling tenders for a pump for the waterworks station, provision for these having been made in tho loan proposals. . . The Mayor and Mr. Tonar were appointed a deputation to tho Devonport Ferry Company, with 'the addition Ql representatives 'of the Women's Progressive League, to urge improved gangway arrangements at the Northcolo Wharf. .- The drainage engineer, Mr. F. £** Powell, replying to the council's inquiry., wrote that beyond engineering fees and the cost of tho purchase of land, no loan money would be required for r.eweroge works for seven months, after which; progress payments of from £300 to £1000 , should bo required, amounting to £*w at the end of the year, and to -.6000 by. April next year. . . The Birkenhead Council wrote agreeing to the terms for attendance at fires by the Northcote Fire Brigade, till July 11, £ that the new. council could review "« position in the meantime. ~ Precautions are to be urged for «• continued extermination of rats in View of the prevalence of plague m India.
