Seven children, whose average age was 11 years, were feci on a uniform diet, ; except that butter;was given them in the first six months' period and: was : replaced ; by margarine 'the second six months' period. During the third : six months' period, butter was again furnished. : , Otherwise, the diets: remained the:, same; The average gain made by each child in the ' first period, with butter, was 6.32 pounds. - During the second period, with margarine, there was no gain, but an average loss of 1.35 pounds with butter restored for the third period, there was a gain of 8.12 pounds. ■■•; The .report # claims £; that::;: the ?'," results testify conclusively ? that "-' vegetable and animal fat margarines are in no ) way comparable to !?.';■ butter - '■: for *?;■ promoting \ growth. Both supply heat and " enurgy, but butter promotes growth and health, while raaragarine is negative with respect I to growth and ; health promotion. : The reason given as explaining the wide differences between butter ■ and its substitute,' is that'"' butter promotes growth and health to a remarkable degree because it is rich in that vital element called fat Soluble —(a Vitamine), which is absolutely, indispensable to growth and health." .' n , - : .■■ ■ ■ — ..../■■ ■■;;- : ;-'
