THE KINGS THEATRE.

"THE SCALES'"OF JUSTICE." j The new gramme at the Kind's , Theatre, a play entitled "The Scales of i Justice,' was presented by Mips Kate j How.-irdc's . company for the first time i last evening. The play, is an interesting | one. dealing with the fortunes of the ; \ .wife of an army captain who was wrongly condemned to death. From the outset j I the dramatic nature of the piece, is ap- « I parent. A conspiracy is formed to obtain ■' !by means of. a forged will the wealth of j the condemned man. The interest in the , I story is maintained to the end. where in i i a dramatic court-room scene the villain is | j finally brought to hook and justice is i done.* There are also several touching 'scenes, where the supposed widow pleads ; with the man who has defrauded her.. j But the piay has a lighter side, and hum- j our is not by any rr.'sns lacking, thus it makes a strong appeal to all lovers of the stage. Miss Lesley Adrien. who appears as the victim of the plot, the defrauded widow, plays her part in a most appealing manner. Mr. George Cross made a success of the role of Captain Mark Milton in the prologue, but received [ greater appreciation for his excellent por- j traval of Mr.. "One Eye," a typical "old : soldier." The part of the Rev. Lincoln ; Green was taken ir. a most amusing man- j ner by Mi. Bernard Betray, while as a comedian, Mr. S. McGowan, who played j Ned Bowles, was a pronounced success. ] Miss Vers St. John gave a good portrayal , lof the rather winning part of Nellie. The ! i pleasure of the evening was increased by | S the excellent music that was rendered by i a small though efficient orchestra. The j play will be rapeated for three evenings, i
