NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. " BY AECHER. .-'.''.'::■'.■ With;the near approach of the jumping season trainers are keeping their novices at the lopping business up to the mark with plenty of schooling work, while other jumpers iu preparation for .the winter campaign are also indulged in try-outs over the timber, and consequently there has been, an abundance of schooling at Ellerslie of late. Yesterday morning was a particularly : busy one. Beauty was tried over two hurdles and shaped satisfactorily. No Bother was sent over the steeplechase ; fences in the centre of the course and got through his task safely. Pentagram...flew two pony hurdles, then two of the bigger ones. At the first of the latter obstacles ho hit very hard, and was nearly down, but his rider . (T. . Chaplin) made a wonderful'recovery. He cleared the next fence cleverly. Flowing Bowl, Wish Wynne. Great Fun, and Oakland were associated! in a. task over four hurdles, finishing in I the order named. '..'.Wish Wynne gave • the best exhibition, '■" Flowing' Bowl also shaping in good style, but - Great Fun hit several fences. Oakland jumped safely, but was a long way behind the others.: Elstow and War Tank gave; a satisfactory display over five hurdles. Bang was tried over four hurdles,, fencing without . mistake, but. he stopped at ■ the first fence : before being induced to take it; on. & Kopaka jumped two pony hurdles, then, Joined by Kauri Park, went over the same fences a' second I time. The pair were then sent over several of the schooling hurdles, * and acquitted ■ themselves in the same promising* style that they have been doing through their education as jumpers. Opaloid did a round over four hurdles, fencing .very proficiently for - a novice- ; Rosullus. who was brought over from Avondale, showed some aptitude for the lepning business by the' • manner in which she got over six hurdles. - . Narrow Neck was schooled over eight.hurdles'," jump in-/ each. of , the fences well except the last, which he chanced somewhat. '-■; The star item of the morning was, a. ■ really . excellent display of fencing given by those fine jumpers. Silverton and Oakleigh. who covered around ;of the steeplechase fences: in their best stylo. ' •■.■• • ::" . ,

Kaotane, who has performed somewhat unluckily since winning the Trial. Hack Handicap at the Napier Park spring meeting, got. on the winning list \ aerain - ; by annexing the' Autumn Handicap at Hastings on Saturday. ~, He is a three-year-old gelding by Gay Lad out of the Formosaji .mare. Dabchick, ■ and'is among the first of his sire's progeny to win. Kaotane is owned by Mrs. A- E. Symes, and it would bo pleasing to find him carrying his lady owner's • colours with -still further success. /; ■:> Meeting Highland on 71b better terms than the weight-for-age scale, allows and on ' a soft track which suited him 10 a .nicety, that' fine . sprinter, ; MireUßonta, easily accounted for the three-year-old in the Hawke's Bay -Stakes last week. Considering his infirmities. Mireusonta .has done remarkably well lately, having, won. three times and been'-second once : in': f his-, last six : starts. Ho is reported to have, been lame before going out for the Hawke's Bay Stakes- - Zouave followed up his second in the Hawke's Bay Cup by , taking! the Burke Memorial Stakes on the second day. He is a three-year-old bay gelding by Martian out of Rose Red, therefore a full brother- to Raceful. •; This was his fifth, win this season, although \he has '.- not . registered \j- anything of an impressive ; nature, but if .he improves with age, as a number of his sire's progeny have done, then next season he may turn out a . good handicap; horse for Mr. ,C. Elgar. By winning the Porangahau Handicap at Hastings on Saturday - last Joy .Ride, the four-year-old son iof : defunct Merrj Moment and Sanguine,, notched his fourth ;'c6nsecutivo win, all "of which' have been, registered within a month. . This y felloe is ! a muchimproved 'horse that, should ' win-a -lot more money for his ; owner-trainer,. W. -HowardHe is related to that brilliant sprinter, Royal Blood, being a half-brother to Sanguinary, the dam of Royal Blood.-.,; ■/'.".'■'.' '■Ki: Correspondent,, the Hawke's Bay Cup winner, has raced' very consistently this season, having won five times, been second twice, and third three times. ..; He is a five-year-old bay gelding by Gazeley out of the Finland mare Communique. The win recorded on Saturday is Correspondent's . second cup success this .'season, -he having won the Rangitikei Cup earlier in the season. ' The success'gained . by Vagabond in the Karamu Hurdle Race at Hastings on - Monday marks ■ the ,'. first; occasion -, on which he has ' been successful in a jumping event. This feUow has the size and his performances on the flat were considerably better than those of the majority of our hurdlers. His jumping has shown marked improvement of late, and. this being so, it will be surprising if this fine stayer fails to make good during : the coming jumping season. '• J. Olsen, who it will be remembered was badly injured while riding Signysian ,at Napier Park a couple of seasons ago, as a consequence of which he has been unable to follow his calling since then, was recently granted a license by the Licensing Committee of th»' Racing Conference. Olsen is now attached to P. JHazelman's stable, and, if he can regain his old. form in the saddle, should not lack, for mounts. '' ' «■'Flowing Bowl shaped fairly well when sohooled .at Elkfrslie .'yesterday:.'mprniug, but, despite his recent racing over the ; obstacles* ho will require more experience yet before he reaches that degree of proficiency in > his jumping that; will : be ■: necessary for him to do before he makes a successful' jumper. The Kemball two-year-olds, Kilris and All Gold, were well to the fore- in the juvenile events at the Hawke's Bay autumn meeting, running first and second respectively in the Nursery Handicap and second and third respectively in the Juvenile Handicap. The former is a half-sister (by Kilboy) to Tigritiya. ..'--'' '.■,':■:■'■-' ,' Watchman, winner of the Poukawa Handicap at Hastings, paid a double-figure dividend. He followed up his first-day form by finishing second in the Akitiq; Handicap Otj the second day.. Watchman is a- three-year-old brown gelding, by Feramorz out 'i of . Watchful, and is owned by tho well-known sportsman, Mr. H. Neagle ...v,.''It is evidently the intention of: Mr.. R. T. Reid to"::', confine No) Bother's efforts to steeplechasing at the Auckland winter meeting, for ■'.it ■' is noteworthy that while the' Coronet gelding has been accorded an entry for the big cross-country events, he does not appear as an entrant for the Great Northern Hurdle Race. ::' '■■- v ;'■;;,:, S';.Barrier, winner of the Okawa Handicap on the second day of the Hawke's Bay meeting, has been a very consistent performer this season,: his record being five wins and three seconds in 15 starts. Barrier is a five-year-old gelding by Heather Mixture out ot the Multifid mare . Serbia. A newcomer to the Ellerslie tracks is the Bezcnian gelding Bang, who has. previously been trained in the country. It , is. intended to give him a course of schooling with: a view to racing .him over hurdles during the winter. - ■ -. -:";; '•.-:■',■■.'-■■. The AVaverley trainer, W. :-; Dwyer, ' who recently returned from Sydney, has purchastd Alaric, a four-year-old gelding by San Fran out of, Dolly . Fisher. : Alaric ran •' second to: Black Cruiser at the recent Manawatu meeting. The price is stated to have been £250. ■ ' ■■-■ '•- ■;,'■'. , ; . The handicaps for the Wanganui Steeplechase and the Century Hurdle Race, to be decided at the Wanganui winter meeting, are due to appear on Friday next. The j weights for the minor events will appear on the following Friday. May .11. : Volo has broken down, and he is not likely to race for some considerable time. The Auckland sportsman, Mr- A. E. Tattley. made a costly purchase when he bought the Husbandman gelding last winter. Judging by the number of horses that are beim: schooled at Ellerslie, there- will be no dearth of hack hurdlers in Auckland, and, as usual, the minor hurdle events at the A.E C. Winter Meeting will surely, draw bi? nominations. The well-known horseman. J. O'Shea, will make his reappearance in the saddle at the Eirmont winter meeting next week, having been engaged to ride Boomerday. Golden Bubble, and Daddy's Girl at that gathering. Just Quietly, who has gone on the right way since racing at the Avondale autumn meeting, is to fulfil engagements at the Egmont winter meeting, and C Hodder intends taking him south to-morrow. Miss Melva. who showed improved form over the hurdles, at the autumn meetings, is training on the right way in her preparation' for the winter campaign. She may be taken south for the Wanganui winter meeting. 'Greyland. a six-year-old bay mare by Marble Arch out of Peggy Pryde, is a newcomer to the Ellerslie track, where she is working under the supervision of her owners, the Messrs. Prangley Bros. Crown Gem and Slave Mart were offered for sale by auction at Hastings last week, but both failed to find buyers, the former being passed at lOOgns. and the latter at Togns. Mumble continues to progress satisfactorily in her essays over the small sticks at Ellerslie. and. cleared four pony hurdles :n ■ approved fashion on Monday morningL. Manson will be riding at the Egmont j winter meeting next week, and is to ride 1 Bitholia and Just Quietly in their engagements. ■ T The yearling gelding by Tressady out of ; Lileacre. purchased in Sydney by Mr. M- ; Hobbs, has joined W. Hobbs' team at Riccarton. , '- -. ■ \ ; ; , The ■ local light-weight. H. Wiggins, will - bo noing at the Egmont winter meeting : where he is to ride Hipo, Master CuTran. and Loved One. -

It : - is i intended ,to give ■; Geoffrey a spell before asking him.to race again. The Aus-tralian-bred gelding was recently purchased by Mr. W. J. Wilson. ■'..'* ; The j imported colt by King's Proctor out of Jessamine is making ;:steady .progress in hie preparation, and is furnishing into' rather a fine: type:: of ; horse- •- _ 'H. Eva takes '*' his departure for . Hawera with- Golden: Bubble on Thursday with ; a view :to racing: the ! - Absurd .sprinter at, the Egmont winter meeting. .:, '~,:..: The Waipukurau : Racing! Club showed ■ a profit, of £681 over its recent one-day meeting. t • ~ J\ v ;■'---; The hunter Beauty has been added to the team- of horses under tho charge, of A. Julian at Ellerslie. :» .-':'.,. /■;; ;.-:.'*..; -. :.: After working at EllersJle yesterday morning War Tank was very, lame and very likely his'.: preparation '; may be ; interrupted. ■; ; Esplanade, who for. some .time has been under the care of T. .-Morriss. is back. in his old quarters in ,J. E. Thorpe's stable. The' Marlborough Racing. Club's Autumn Meeting is set down to take place-on, Friday and Saturday, of this week. -;:.■■'., Hallowvonia (by Hallowmas—Merrivonia) is reported, to 'be shaping well in her schooling tasks.-.':':' :■;'■-■.'-:'■:-.
