THE SUGAR SHORTAGE.
<< HOARDING " SUGGESTED. POSITION OF CONSUMER.. , The idea which has gone abroad that, there is a shortage of sugaJr appears to be • both true and untrue. The sugar producers say that Auckland; is receiving its normal. allowance, but, contrasted, with this, there' is admittedly a shortage in the supply to be obtained . over the grocer s counter. . : _ - . _ The explanation ' of : this seeming anomaly is, apparently, not far to seek., A wholesale trader yesterday-suggested that the shortage to the consumer was attributable to the fact that certain' people, - fearing a real shortage and a, corresponding augmentation of price, had laid in a stock, or" hoard " of 'sugar. This, from the point , of view of the individual " hoarder," may seem to be a wise and understandable action, but, followed, to its logical conclusion, it means that.the poor person who cannot afford to adopt similar tactics, is prevented from securing the usual, weekly quantities.... ' Admittedly there is at- present .no surplus sugar coming to hand, but all the same the statement was recently made, in authoritative quarters - that there . was not much prospect of an advance in price in-the near future.
