INTERNATIONAL ROGUES
TWO MORE ARRESTS MADE.
DISGUISE UNAVAILING.
• Australian . and N.Z. Cable Association. (Rorrl. 330 p.m.) , ; PARIS, April 30. Supposed -to be in embers of - an -international gang of thieves, Charles Edward Holloway,. an American, and • Francis O'Brien, an Australian, have been arrested. The arrests followed complaints by Louis Kubin, an American banker, "who was victimised on Thursday in Brussels to the extent of £2000 by a confidence trick. Rubin came to Paris, with a detective, ■where he recognised the portrait of O'Brien as 'the .man who robbed him. The :police went to an hotel in. the . Rue .de Tlivoli • and learnt i that: O'Brien had-gone to Cherbourg to join the Mauretania, but they arrested 'Holloway 'as an alleged accomplice. O'Brien's description 'was telegraphed to Cherbourg. During the. train journey, however, O'Brien changed everything he wore, including; his socks, and discarded a pair •of gold-rimmed spectacles.' His appearance was so altered that two Americans were arrested who were travelling in the same compartment. The error • was found before the Mauretania sailed, and O'Brien was arrested as he was boarding the ship. He vigorously protested that he was an English citizen, but the police searched his luggage and found £2500 in English, French arid Belgian money hidden. in a shirt in his travelling . bag. : Holloway has been identified as one of three men who tried to swindle an American shoe-merchant in September, and was captured after a struggle in which a detective was shot. ' Holloway was in hospital for some time,; and was then released on condition that he left the country. Warren, who was recently arrested :in Paris on charges' of swindling, denies; that he served sentences : in Australia, or that he was the leader of a band of international thieves. He declares, that his arrest has humiliated his wife, who is related to persons in high positions in ; England. He alleges that she is the divorced wife of- a foi-mer Cabinet . Minister in. a large British Dominion, and -that her three brothers are magistrates in London, Canada and Egypt. Senor Santos, a Spanish business man, on Saturday gave evidence that Warren swindled him of £1650. Monrecon, a Frenchman, gave evidence that Warren cheated, him of £4000.
