Two fires occurred at Huntly early this morning. • A three-roomed cottage in Huntly South, owned by Mr. Albert Carlyon, and occupied by Mr. D. Grant, was destroyed, everything being lost. The occupants escaped through the windows. The building was insured for'£2so in the New Zealand Office. The viand boarding house, owned and occupied by Mr. William Robb. was also damaged. . Practically everything was burned, though the boarders saved their wearing apparel. • The insurance on the furniture was £300 in the Eagle Stair Company and on the house £750 in this South British. . . The cause of the fire is not known. Though the fire brigade is _ well trained it is rendered practically useless by the ' inadequate ' fire-fighting appliances with which it is supplied. More water showered over the spectators than over the fire, owing to the hose pipes being in an advanced stage of decay. ■ FISHERMAN'S HOUSE DESTROYED. ESCAPE IN NIGHT ATTIRE. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIHI, Monday. A cottage belonging to Mr. F. McKeo, fisherman, at Waihi Beach, was completely destroyed by fire _ at an early hour this morning. The inmates, Mr. McKee, Mrs. McKee, and the two young children escaped in night attire. Nothing was saved. It is understood the property was insured. BRIGADE EFFECTS GOOD "SAVE." PLUMBER'S SHOP ON FIRE. [BT TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] DARGAVILLE. Monday. The prompt action of the fire brigade averted a serious fire on Sunday night, when premises in Victoria Street, occupied by Mr,. H. W. Davies, plumber, ' and owned by Mr. A. Costello, were discovered to be on fire. Although the building was an old one the flames were soon under control. The damage to the building, which is insured in the National Office, is estimated at £50, and to the stock, insured in the Standard Office, at £80.
