GOLF ON SUNDAY.

Sir—Unlike Mr. Thornes I went to hear Mr. James on the Sunday subject, but J did not understand him to condemn Sunday : golf,. but rather to urge that it . were well '■■■:■ to. attend to y'certain other things as well. But the chief interest to me in Mr. Thornea' letter was his answer to the question, . " Where -is God?". It is not the first time that , that question has been asked. ;;?■ Mr. : Thorn finds the • answer in the midnight. sky when, in the " still hours of the night ho' gazes upon . the myriads of worlds greater than this "; and - iir. the " magnificent sunrise •or sunset " ; or in - the " stupendous majesty of mountain scenery " ; the " solitudes of the desert 7 '; or " the mystic unfolding beauties of garden, forest or •wilderness." Then man's "full heart should' reach out in worship," and " come a little nearer to the greatness and tae sublimity which surrounds him'. Long ago a great .teacher asked . himself the question propounded 'by Mr. Thornes, but he; came to a different conclusion. Perhaps it is one of the most dramatic- 'scenes in all literature; may 1 quote it T " And, behold, the Lord passed by and a great and strong/wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord * but the Lord . was not in the ; wind ; and after the wind an earthquake; but tho Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake ■ a fire ; but the 3>ord was not in the fire; and after the flr-u, » still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, ho wrapped his face in his mantle . .• i" : I remember .well: a sermon by Bishop Cowie on this subject of Sunday. The: bishop declared that ideas ohange through. time and so the method of Sunday observance had changed from time to time,. and ho came to the same conclusion as Elijah that the guide was the " still .small voice "; and perhaps we lesser people may. not be far .wrong if we leave.it there.
