ATTEMPTED SUICIDE DENIED.

YOUNG MAN CONVICTED.

; An echo of dissension between husband and wife was heard in the Police Court yesterday, when a young man, Arthur Rowell, was charged, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., with having attempted to* commit suicide on April 21. Accused denied the charge. A constable stated that he had found accused lying on a seat in Albert Park, pale and apparently very ill. Accused said he had taken the contents of a bottle which had contained a drug, and was lying on the ground behind the seat. On the way to the police station Rowell said he had gone to the park with the intention of ending his life. . A solicitor who appeared for accused's wife in a separation case on April 20, said that accused, when leaving witness' office after the hearing, threatened to commit suicide. As he had previously ir.ade this threat witness did not take it seriously. In a statement from the dock, accused said he suffered from an internal complaint and took the drug to gain relief. He admitted he had previously threatened to commit suicide, but had done so solely with the object of effecting a reconciliation with his wife. Accused was convicted and ordered to pay medical expenses, 18s.

VAGRANT . SENT TO PRISON.

A sentence of. six months" imprisonment was imposed art" John Fairlev, need 37, on a charge of being an incorrigible .rogue in that he had no lawful visible mean? of support and had previously been convicted as a rogue and vagabond. It was stated that accused was discharged from gaol last January and had a bad record. OFFENCES DUE TO DRINK. For being* drunk in Queen Street and throwing a 'half-handle" glass on to fhe street. Thomas McFadden, sped 43. who has only one leg, was fined £2. His explanation was that the glass fell. August Anderson, aged 28, was fined £3. in default 14 days' imprisonment, for having committed an indecent act in Queen Street while drank. ALLEGED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. On a charge of having assaulted Joseph Sing, and robbed him of £1, Alfred Croft, aged 45, and Peter Trainer, aged 42. were remanded till Thursday.
