AWARD TO AU C K LAND ER. 1851 EXHIBITION SCHOLARSHIP. Mr. R. W. E. B. Harman, who has - been recommended as this year's recipient . of tho 1861 exhibition scienc6 ; scholarship ;by the ■ • Senate of tho University of . New Zealand, is a resident: of Benson Road, Remuera. Ho is 25 years of age, and is tho son of Mr.' William liarmtin, of .Dominion Road, and lato of Hamilton. Ilia education commenced at the To Kowhai public school, near . Hamilton,' and con-, - tinued at tho Hamilton High School and ••••'. the Auckland University College.' In 1911 • ho obtained a junior board scholarship, ; and two years later? a "senior"scholarship.. Ho was dux of tho Hamilton High" School . ' in 1915 and 1916. In tho '' latter year ' ;•" 2.1*. Harman obtained a University en- - - trance scholarship, and entered the Auc.k- : (- land University College. Twelve- months, later he passed tho .first section of the •• • • B.Sc. In 1918 ho servM. ia thd army,. but'?fr; in 1919 ho / succeedod in completing his >> Sc. examination, obtaining premiums in •:; pure and \ applied mathematics and • ad- •: vanced chemistry. He > was.; also awarded .<X the' Sir George Grey scholarship. • For two years after;' that Mr. . Harman ' . was a science master at. ;iho Kelson Col- ; lege, but , since then he has hold a simi- .. -> lar position all tho Auckland ; ; Grammar ; ; . School. ; Despite his : scholastic duties Mr. "; .Harman has carried out. a chemistry research of the highest merit at tho 'University, and has . passed with first-class • . honours his. M.Sc. degree. His latest - distinction, that of 'being recommended for the exhibition scholarship, is a very ' high one, all tho ; more so 'as this year : there were a number of brilliant : competitors. Mr. Harman intends to go to England . and continue his studies at Cambridge. Seven 1851. exhibition scholarships arc* granted annually to. residents in the British Dominions, ono being allotted to New Zealand. It is valued at £250 per annum for two, and, in -exceptional ■ cir- 5 c urn stances, three, years. The recipient must continue his scientific researches at a University outside his own country.
