DEATH OF CANON F* : GOULD. •: LONG SERVICE : IN CHURCH. ■ Canon Frank Gould, one,of the oldest and- best-known of . tho clergy of the- An- .] glican .Church in Now Zealand died yesterday at . Gisborno at the advanced age of :96 years. : Tie.-deceased, who had re*: ; sided at Gisborno for the past few years, arrived ■ in New-* Zealand as a young- man of 21, .in 1848, being a passenger; to Auck- ? land by the ship Clara. He came out to join Bishop ; Selwyn . and •on his arrival took up work at St. John's College, where lie had charge of tho boy students. After being at St.. John's for four years he was ordained by Bishop Seiwyn and then went to Russell/in;.. which district he was : stationed for nine years. He was then transferred to Otahuhu, .where he remained for the long period of 42 years. . The i««nsh formerly was - that of Otaliuliu-cum-Pan-mure- -and for some years Ellerslie also was included .in the area. - - ' For many years after coming to Otahuhu Canon Gould extended his ministrations over a wide area. It, was shortly after, his arrival from Russell that thy Waikato war broke out and. ho served as a chaplain with the troops for some time. Ho also, for many years, paid quarterly .visits to the Kaipara and Northern Wairoa districts, then: in -the early stages of settlement-. In 1903, . owing to his advancing 1 years, he retired from his position as vicar of Otahuhu, and' subsequently took up his ; residence at Gisborne. • . \ A diary of his experiences was kept by ; Canon Gould' and thig made an interesting record of : the life of the church and the : progress of settlement: in the early times, U nfortunatoly. it was ' destroyed with other personal belongings in a firo . that ' took place vin '' a . housein which . the .writer's property was stored at Otahuhu after his retirement from; tho . charge of tho parish. To the last, notwithstanding: his great age, Canon: Gould' retained ; his vitality in a wonderful manner, and until quite recently he was able ,to work in his garden. Ho had many friends throughout the Dominion, and by these his death will be greatly regretted. Canon Gould, who married a daughter of Captain * Clendon,- an early: Russell settler,, had been a widower since ; 1887.
