AIR SERVICE TO INDIA.
PROJECT UNDER DISCUSSION.
AUSTRALIA'S AID SOUGHT.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 3.45 p.m.), LONDON, April 21.
The question whether Australia shall receive benefit of an airship service within 18 months depends on how far the Federal Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, is prepared to support the scheme. If, when he comes to England in September, he is prepared to say definitely the extent of Australia's financial backing, the scheme will be under way early in 1925. This assurance was given to the Australian and New Zealand Press Association in a special interview by Commander C. D. Barney, who is now in negotiation with the British Government to run an airship service to India, which would reduce the period for the transit of Australian mails by two weeks. "The Committee of Imperial Defence," said Commander Burney, "is now considering the financial terms of my scheme for an Indian service. I expect finality early this year. I have not received any support from the Australian Government, and am getting somewhat tired of beating the air. As soon as it is decided that a company -will be formed, ships will be. built, and a service inaugurated in 18 months. The present scheme . embraces what I call the half stage to India. If Mr. Bruce comes clothed in authority to deal with this question, Australia can be easily included. • I hope he will, as that is the only sensible course. I hope to arrange a bi-weekly service to India, together with a weekly extension to Australia, carrying mails, passengers, and produce."
