GOLF.

SPLENDID PERFORMANCE.

RECORD MIDDLEMORE) SCORE,

WRIGHT GOES ROUND IN 71.

-;, A record as far; as the Middlemore ' links is concerned was put up by. R. D. Wright, of the Auckland Golf Club, on Saturday. Playing in the .first round of the E. K. Bloomfield Bowl competition, ! Wright went round the 18 holes in 71, which easily constitutes a record for the course. His score going out was 36, which works out at 5 under bogey, and he cam© home, in 85, which was again 5 better than the colonel. His card read as follows: Out.— 5, 4, 4, 5, 4, 3, 3, 5: 36. 1n.—4.. 4. 4, 3, 4, 3, 6, 4, 4j 35. Total 71. .The bogey for. the course is 81. •,-v. ;•>.•.,>.■■ ' The recent rain had made the course in very fine order and 60 players turned out to participate in the contest, Wright's fine performance was by far the outstanding I feature of the day's play, and at the annual meeting of the Auokland Golf Club in the evening he. received the congratulations of his fellow members. ' It is interesting to note: that on October 81, 1921, when the Australian professional champion. J. H. Kirkwood, played the local professional champion, E. J. Moss, on the Middlemore links/ Kirkwood's score for 17 holes was 72. . Wright's score thus beats Kirkwood's by 1 stroke, and the comparison would have' been even more marked had Kirkwood's score applied to the 18 instead 61 17 holes. '■' '.::'.'...'....;.■:.:■■.::;•..'- » The player with the best two cards of three handicap medal rounds of 18 holes wins the bowl. The winner of each round will receive a trophy, and the . winner of tho bowl for any two seasons. will become the owner. Following were the best cards returned:— R. D. Wright, 71—71; D. MacCormick. 80—3—77; T. H. Holmden. 95-38—77; H. Horton. 86—8—78; W. B. Colbeck, 82— 3—79; S. 0. Hodges, 92—12—80: J. G. Haddow, 92—12—80; R. G. Rainger,.', 83—3—80; A. M. "Howden, 87 7—80; J. E.
