AID FOE THE SICK.
APPEAL FOR NURSES' FUND.
OVER £1000 COLLECTED.
"A generous response .was made yesterday by Aucklanders to the appeal of the St. John Ambulance for funds to carry on the excellent work of its district nursing service. A tstrong corps of collectors was early on duty, and as a result of the day's efforts the sum of £734. was secured. Prior lo yesterday's street, collection a private appeal had been made to many citizens, the donations thus received amounting to £220. The cause is one with which the public is in full sympathy, and in the majority of cases the collectors met with a ready response to their appeal yesterday. Collections were made at Devonport, Bayswater, and other marine suburbs, the rattle of 'the familiar St. John boxes being heard in some cases as early as seven o'clock, the idea of the energetic collectors being to catch the workers on their way to the city. Although the sum subscribed.-, falls short of the objective, £2500, which is lie amount required for the maintenance of the service for the next three years, it will enable the three district nurses to continue their splendid work among the sick poor of the city. The total amount collected in the city for the day was £682, while £52 was obtained at Takapuna. The receipts from Devonport,. Birkenhead, and one or two other places have yet to be added. It is expected that over £1000 will be obtained when all remaining amounts come to hand. ■;•■-''
